We get better at things which we repeat. We carve the paths in our minds for both the good and the bad, reinforcing our thinking. Because of this we often go back to things we have done before, because we already know we are good at it. We will then build on it and continue to get better at it. And it’s all good building up a skil
l! Challenging ourselves to try something new will build new connections in our brain and even add new ideas to the skill we are accomplished at.
Fear
and lack of practise are obstacles-but they are not the end. Every time we think of something in a new way, we are being creative. Every time we problem solve, we are thinking of a new way to do things-we are living creatively. If you were creative in the putting-pen-to-paper sense, where would you start?
The movement of the drawing implements can be relaxing. We can visualise how we want to see things. We have taste and judgement. We enjoy things.
Many great artists change their mediums. You can build up a skill set to implement the medium, with time and work. Creating work which delivers your message or narrative successfully. This idea that your work can be ‘successful’, is a heavy concept, which can weigh down on the enjoyment and really only means the work has done what you set out to do with it. This may simply be to enjoy it!
So what if you want to be creative, purely for the fun? Can you do it?
Who needs to enjoy the process? Who needs to enjoy the results- the creation of your work and process-you!
It seems that the key is to outline your goal with your creativity. It can relieve the pressure and judgement and let creativity seep into other parts of your life too. If you have carve new paths in your thinking, you will think in new ways and be more creative.
